Ghostwire: Tokyo was first announced during Bethesda's E3 2019 showcase, where the game's then-director Ikumi Nakamura made headlines for her eccentric presentation of the game during the showcase. Later the same year, Nakamura announced that she would be departing Tango GameWorks, and later announced that she had opened her own independent studio. A year after its reveal, the game was re-revealed at Sony's Future of Gaming presentation, where it was revealed that it would be a timed PlayStation 5 console exclusive alongside Arkane's Deathloop. The game was originally slated for a 2021 release but was delayed to early 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic's effect on the game's development.
