Bungie is currently in the midst of making some monumental changes to Destiny 2's core gameplay systems. As of Season 17, which is coming out on May 24, players will get to enjoy an all-new sandbox experience, a Raid/Dungeon rotation, improved Iron Banner PvP, and more, to say nothing of the all-new content that's yet to be revealed.
It's not too strange, then, that Destiny 2 would also be getting a major event retrofit as well in the near future. With its latest TWAB blog post, Bungie went into substantial detail on how the new Solstice event will function when it returns in Season 17, with one of the biggest changes being the introduction of a new type of event microtransaction: the Event Card.

Season 17's Solstice event (previously known as Solstice of Heroes) is going to kick off on July 19, and it will introduce a revamped event progression system with the Event Cards. Event Cards themselves will be free for all players, and they will work in much the same way as the current Seasonal Challenges do. However, players will also have the opportunity to spend an extra 1,000 Silver to upgrade their Event Card and unlock an additional reward track with exclusive cosmetics, which makes the whole thing sound similar to Destiny's Age of Triumph Record Books.
The new Destiny 2 Solstice of Heroes armor set will still be the focal point of event progression, and free for all players as a key aspirational reward during the Solstice. This time, though, players will have the opportunity to fine-tune their armor as they complete the free version of the Event Card, which should make for a more satisfying and personalized progression experience across the board,
