Doctor Strange's Name Takes on New Meaning as Marvel Lore Changes Forever

The term «Strange» just got an all-new definition in the Marvel Universe, giving an epic new meaning to Doctor Strange's iconic title. In Eternals #12 from Marvel Comics, the Great Machine reveals the true origin of Marvel's superheroes, bringing the universe's many different breeds of superhuman under a single banner: the Strange.
Eternals has taken some massive swings at redefining the heroes of the Marvel Universe. Among them, the comic has revealed the shocking true cost of being Eternal and how the Great Machine (aka the Earth) sacrifices a human life every time one of them is resurrected. The reveal broke the Eternals as they questioned their life's purpose, and allowed Thanos to gain power as the Prime Eternal and nearly destroy the planet. Thankfully, the Eternals defeated Thanos, but not before the Machine revealed the final piece in the puzzle of their true purpose.

In Eternals #12 — from Kieron Gillen, Esad Ribic, Matthew Wilson, and Clayton Cowles - Ajak connects with the Avengers' Celestial headquarters, where she learns the truth. Fans already knew that when the first Celestial who came to Earth, the Progenitor, died, it released necrofluids into the ecosystem, however the Great Machine reveals the individual roles of Eternals, humans, and Deviants. Deviants change along with the necrofluid, stabilizing and modifying it in ways they can then pass on to humans (a process which it's suggested created X-Men's mutants.)
