The world of Naruto always had technology, but Boruto took that too far as evidenced by the introduction of its version of the Nintendo Switch. While Boruto's version of the hit game console actually predates Nintendo's by more than a year, the parallels between the ninja device and the gaming sensation make the comparison obvious. More than just a weird bit of world-building, this gaming console actually makes the entire franchise's world less believable.
Modern technology was always present throughout Naruto. Since the manga's very beginning, technology from the '90s such as TVs, satellite dishes, and even computers are seen throughout the world. This certainly gives the franchise a unique flair. The influence of Japanese myth and folklore is immense on Naruto. There's a reason many of Sasuke's jutsu in Nartuo are named after Shinto gods. However, far from using a feudal Japanese setting like other manga about ninjas, the culture of Naruto is fairly modern. That's why the series' technology never feels too out of place. Another reason the series' technology never felt out of place is that it was almost always relegated to the background and was rarely, if ever, central to the main events of the series. Unfortunately, all of that changed for the worse in Boruto, and nothing symbolizes that decline better than the ninja version of the Nintendo Switch.
