The writers behind Horizon Forbidden West have revealed which of the new game’s characters was the hardest to write. The sequel to 2017’s Horizon Zero Dawn was released on February 18, 2022, for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4. While the new game has been generally well-received by both critics and fans, Horizon Forbidden West has recently been review bombed for ridiculous reasons. Thankfully, the swath of malicious reviews has not affected the game’s overall review score significantly.
Horizon Forbidden West builds upon the strengths of its predecessor, combining gorgeous visuals with engaging gameplay, and adds new tools such as the grappling hook and glider, a new branching skill tree system, a new swimming mechanic, and more. The game’s world and story have also been expanded significantly, with the introduction of the titular Forbidden West region and all the mysteries it holds. Aloy will end up meeting and conversing with many new characters throughout her journey through the Forbidden West. However, just like in Zero Dawn, Horizon Forbidden West’s choices don’t really matter to its ending, as developer Guerrilla Games has only created one ending for the game.

In an interview with GamesRadar+, Horizon Forbidden West narrative director Ben McCaw and senior writer Annie Kitain reveal that Beta, Aloy’s Far Zenith clone, was the most difficult character to write. According to McCaw, it took several drafts, revisions, and rethinking before developers got the writing for Beta where they wanted it to be.
