Out of all the members of the Avengers, Marvel's Hawkeye is one of the least respected — not because of his lack of skill, but seeming lack of purpose. In a team alongside billionaire tech geniuses, Norse Gods and other incredibly powerful super-beings, Clint Barton charges into battle with a bow, a quiver of arrows, and no superpowers of any kind. But Hawkeye's death provided detractors of the character with the proof that he is a valuable member of the team — and perhaps the bravest.
The 2004 Avengers Disassembled crossover event was a vitally important moment in the history of the team, drastically changing the roster, turning heroes into villains, and even ending with the death of multiple Avengers. While all of them eventually returned to the land of the living, these deaths and the aftermath of the event reverberated throughout the rest of the Marvel Universe. Much of the material written would even be repurposed for use in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, albeit spread out over multiple films. But the beginning of Avengers Disassembled contains more shocking moments than any film in the MCU.

In the first issue, Ant-Man is killed by an exploding Jack of Hearts, Vision crashes a jet into Avengers Mansion and disintegrates into Ultron drones, Iron Man has a drunken outburst at the United Nations and a Kree battleship attacks the remaining heroes. As the other Avengers attempt to make sense of the situation, Hawkeye changes into battle with dozens of arrows, launching them into one Kree soldier after another. Unfortunately, he is shot in the back by multiple soldiers, destroying his arrows and mortally wounding the Avenger.
