Halo Infinite‘s multiplayer mode was once ‘hero-based’ like Overwatch, according to a journalist.
In response to a tweet from podcaster Chris Ray Gun implying that 343 Industries had spent “a lot of the budget” for Halo Infinite on an “Overwatch clone”, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier commented that while 343 did spend some time on a hero-based mode, it wasn’t quite as Chris Ray Gun had suggested.
“This was actually cut from my article late last year – yes, 343 spent a while prototyping a hero-based system,” Schreier claimed.
“I don’t remember exactly when they switched to the current version (and the tweet linked here seems exaggerated to the point where it’s mostly false) but I can confirm that they were working on various hero-based prototypes. In fact, I think there were both PVP and PVE prototypes built.”
While Halo Infinite’s multiplayer isn’t quite the traditional Halo multiplayer experience, it is mostly familiar to fans of the franchise.
The mode, which is free-to-play, was launched separately from the main Halo Infinite campaign for the first time in the series’ history.
Its release hasn’t been plain sailing, however, as some players have stated that the various progression systems and the amount of content in the multiplayer mode have been disappointing.
Earlier this month it was revealed that Certain Affinity had taken on additional Halo Infinite development duties.
The prolific support studio, which is based in Austin, Texas, has collaborated on instalments in the Halo and Call of Duty franchises since 2007, as well as shooters Left 4 Dead and Doom.
