Microsoft and Paramount are promoting the newly-released Halo television series with a special AR effect for Instagram and Facebook Messenger, which lets users don a virtual Halo Spartan suit in video calls. The official Halo show finally premiered on Paramount Plus this past week, and has been fairly well received in spite of some reactions to its canon and the reveal of the Master Chief's face.
For those who are excited about the debut of the series, the Halo Group Effect has been rolled out today as an addition to Instagram and Facebook Messenger, as announced in a press release. The effect allows video callers to wear their own augmented-reality Spartan suit during group calls, and talk to each other against the backdrop of some of the series' famed locations. Call members are randomly assigned one of the four suits worn by Silver Team in the Halo TV show, including the Master Chief and his Mjolnir armor. Once callers are in their suits, they can raise their eyebrows to open their helmet's visor or open their mouths to create a sparking effect in the background.

Like other group effects on Instagram and Facebook Messenger, the Halo Group Effect is a free add-on that anyone can access. After starting a video call, the effect can be activated by tapping the smiley face icon and selecting group effects. There's currently no word on whether the Halo Group Effect is a limited-time offering or when it might be discontinued, so fans can virtually dress up as Halo's Silver Canon Spartans to their heart's content.
