One of the biggest video game controversies of 2021 surrounded the somewhat spontaneous release of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition for current and last-gen consoles. The collection of PS2 Grand Theft Auto titles was met with major backlash at launch from both fans and critics for underwhelming performance on all consoles, changes to the visuals, and poorly implemented new mechanics. Grand Theft Auto Trilogy was announced in October 2021 after months of rumors to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Grand Theft Auto 3. Upon release the collection was slammed for major technical issues, appearing on many "Disappointing games of 2021" lists.
