Warning! SPOILERS for Obi-Wan Kenobi episode 3.
The Obi-Wan Kenobi series features the live-action debut of The Grand Inquisitor, but his apparent death and unpopular redesign may be explained by one theory. The Grand Inquisitor is an unnamed Pau'an Jedi who served as aJedi Temple Guard in Star Wars during the Clone Wars, but he eventually fell to the dark side and joined the Empire as its most formidable Inquisitor, assisting Darth Vader in hunting down the Jedi Purge survivors and presiding over the other Imperial Inquisitors. The Grand Inquisitor’s live-action appearance has been the subject of criticism among viewers, as has his apparent death in the show’s second episode, which takes place five years before his Star Wars Rebels debut. One unlikely but possible scenario would sufficiently explain both issues, however.
The Grand Inquisitor served as the main antagonist of Rebels in the show’s first season, pursuing former Jedi padawan Kanan Jarrus and aspiring Jedi Ezra Bridger. Despite his death at the end of the season, The Grand Inquisitor continues to appear in Star Wars canon material, with roles in various comics, explaining part of his origin and even his escapades following his demise (thanks to Darth Vader using the dark side to trap his spirit in a Jedi outpost). The Grand Inquisitor is an understandably popular character due to these appearances, so when his live-action appearance underwhelmed some viewers (who felt it didn’t align with his animated and comic appearances), there was a degree of backlash.
