Gran Turismo 7 receives its 1.29 update tomorrow, bringing PS VR2 compatibility and four new vehicles for race fans to dive into. The update is also bringing a surprise challenge that Sony has been working on for well over a year: Sophy, the AI racecar driver.
Sony took the lid off of Sophy almost a year ago today. An advanced AI that used anonymous racing data from the PlayStation network and then was tested against the best Gran Turismo drivers in the world, Sophy is designed to not only be a skilled driver but also be fun to race against. Or at least, that's what Sony and Polyphony Digital are hoping for.

It sounds like Sophy might not quite be ready for full implementation. The 1.29 update will allow you to race against it, but only for a limited time. "Gran Turismo Sophy Race Together" will last from February 21 to the end of March and is accessible via the top-right panel of the Gran Turismo 7 world map. The mode is being described as a "first look" and Sony is asking for player feedback to prepare Sophy for future releases.
The mode will have players race Sophy in four circuits of increasing difficulty and cars of varying performance levels. This is likely so that Sony and Polyphony can get an abundance of real-world data to better train Sophy in various cars and on various race tracks. You can also race against Sophy in a 1vs1 mode with identical cars for a true human vs. machine challenge.
Sophy won't just be an inscrutable machine in this limited-time game mode. Patch 1.29 will also bring a new emoticon feature that Sophy will use to display its mood throughout the race and to react to in-game actions.
