Gotham may have lost its Batman in Gotham Knights, but players will still have to face some of his most iconic — and eclectic — villains, including both the Court of Owls and Mr. Freeze. Both have become iconic antagonists since their respective introductions, but both being featured in the same game could be a problem given just how different they are.
Gotham Knights' version of the Court of Owls isn't identical to the comic iteration, but its core is the same: The Court is a secretive organization that manipulates Gotham from the shadows and is run by many of Gotham's wealthiest citizens. As the game's main antagonists, they should prove to be an intimidating and unique challenge for the late Batman's protégés. They won't be alone, however, as previous trailers have revealed that Mr. Freeze will be another of the villains that the titular Knights must face. The choice to adapt both of these villains could be an indication of broader issues with Gotham Knights' narrative.

Mr. Freeze and the Court of Owls are certainly both integral to the Batman mythos, but they tend to shine in very different circumstances. The Court of Owls is sinister and terrifying, more cerebral and well-connected than many of Batman's rogues' gallery of villains. The Court of Owls' debut in Gotham Knights' trailer was appropriately intimidating, complemented by the trailer's ominous tone. Mr. Freeze, meanwhile, has developed a more cartoonish reputation that could cause a severe tonal clash.
