Google is updating popular Workspace apps including Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Keep to offer an improved experience on Android devices with larger displays.
Back in March, Google released the 12L update(Opens in a new window) for Android 12 which focused on making tablets and foldables simpler and easier to use. 12L included a new layout for easier viewing, and a taskbar to help multitaskers launch and switch between multiple apps. Google Workspace apps are now catching up with the new features(Opens in a new window) 12L allowed for.
Top of the list of new features is the ability to drag text or images between two Workspace apps when you have them open side-by-side on your device. This will allow information to be grabbed from a Chrome tab and dropped into a Sheets spreadsheet, for example. The same system works for dragging and dropping files stored on Google Drive into Keep where links to those files are automatically created.
It's now possible to open two Google Drive windows side-by-side, which should make file discovery and organization much easier to handle. In order to do this, simply tap the three-dot menu on a Drive file and select "Open in new window" to have the second window appear.
And finally, if you regularly use your large Android device with a keyboard attached, Google is adding support for shortcuts. Google Drive, Docs, and Slides now support the familiar select, cut, copy, paste, undo, and redo keyboard shortcuts, which will speed up many common tasks.
The new features are rolling out to all Android large screen devices with Google Workspace and personal Google Accounts over the next few weeks. So if you don't see them yet, they should appear soon enough.
