In a tactics-heavy game, positional and situational awareness are key to success, which would situate the Demolitionist as an important mercenary for any party in Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion. Unfortunately, the gimmick surrounding the Demolitionist, the destruction of obstacles, is more of a crutch than a feature for the class. Players playing this class can find incredibly fun moments of destruction, but those moments may not come often enough for some players.
There are many aspects of the game stacked against the Demolitionist in Gloomhaven. The Demolitionist is a Melee Damage dealer with poor initiative control, a small hand size, a single starting AoE, and very middling damage values for a dedicated damage dealer. The Demolitionist simply can't compete with the damage potential of The Hatchet in Gloomhaven. The specialty of the Demolitionist is its ability to destroy obstacles, creating various effects from doing so. The Demolitionist thrives from destroying obstacles turn after turn, stacking buffs and special effects to decimate enemies. However, this makes the class far too reliant on obstacles, reducing the effectiveness of the class in a decent number of maps. Even with a Cragheart on the team, the Demolitionist may find trouble keeping up with the other Mercenaries in the party.
