Esteemed director George Miller reveals he was disappointed by his first Mad Max film. The iconic post-apocalyptic franchise first made its debut with 1979's Mad Max and spawned three further sequels in the form of 1981's Mad Max 2, 1985's Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, and the most recent outing in the series, 2015's Mad Max: Fury Road, which garnered six Academy Award wins. Miller is currently undergoing pre-production for the fifth installment in the series titled Furiosa, which is slated to release in 2024.
The story of the original film series is set in a dystopian version of Australia suffering from resource shortages and centers around the adventures of a police officer turned drifter Max Rockatansky. Mel Gibson starred as the titular character in the original trilogy before the role was recast with Inception and The Dark Knight Rises star Tom Hardy in Mad Max: Fury Road. While Miller's action-packed series turned out to be a massive international success, surprisingly, the first film is not held in high regard by the Australian filmmaker.
