Genshin Impact was first released on September 28, 2020, and quickly became a games-as-a-service success for miHoYo. Two weeks after launch, Genshin Impact recouped its development costs of roughly $100 million, and the game's annual budget expanded to $200 million in 2021. Major updates would release in the months and years following launch, introducing a plethora of new content for players to explore. During that time, Genshin Impact's Twitter follower count grew immensely as millions of players joined the community. The game's success also kick-started miHoYo's HoYoverse branding for all of its major games.

Genshin Impact surpassed four million followers on Twitter, encouraging Paimon to celebrate with the community through the social media platform. To celebrate the social media milestone, the Twitter account released new artwork featuring Genshin Impact's Kamisato Ayaka and Yoimiya, two beloved characters from the region of Inazuma. Ayaka is seen in her signature blue battle kimono while Yoimiya is depicted with fireworks procured from Naganohara Fireworks.
