An ex-employee of Apple’s Global Service Supply Chain division by the name of Dhirendra Prasad was charged with fraud back in March 2022 and pleaded guilty over a $17 million value that was committed during his illicit activities. Now, according to the latest decision, Prasad has been sentenced for his crime, will spend time in jail, and will have to pay back Apple and the IRS for the rest of his life.
In a press release issued by the United States Attorney’s office, Prasad has been sentenced to three years in prison and must pay both Apple and IRS an amount upwards of $19 million for his fraudulent activities, which started a few years after he joined the company in 2008.
“Dhirendra Prasad was sentenced to serve three years in prison and ordered to pay $19,270,683 in restitution for conspiring to defraud Apple, Inc., of millions of dollars and for related tax crimes, announced United States Attorney Ismail J. Ramsey and Internal Revenue Service-Criminal Investigation (IRS-CI) Special Agent in Charge Darren Lian.”
Of the $19,270,683, Apple will be paid $17,398,104, while the IRS is owed $1,872,579. However, Prasad did not achieve this level of fraud on his own, as the report states that he was aided by two accomplices named Robert Gary Hansen and Don M. Baker. Both conspirators have admitted to their crimes and have been sentenced separately. The three teamed up to form a shell company that became a front for hiding their stolen millions.
