Two decades after the events of season 1,For All Mankind resurfaces Dr. Wernher von Braun's impact on Margo in season 3's Russian plot. In the show's present-day of 1992, Margo serves as NASA's top administrator after previously holding a role in mission control as an engineer. Her rise to the pinnacle of America's space program was greatly influenced by von Braun, who encouraged her to trust her knowledge and not to hesitate to speak up regardless of the chain of command. Margo and von Braun's relationship dates back to the former's childhood, as Margo's father, who was a University of Huntsville professor, had frequently engaged with von Braun. Despite von Braun's termination from NASA in For All Mankind season 1, Margo continues to apply his lessons in a unique way.
For All Mankind's Wernher von Braun is based on a real-life person who was an aerospace engineer at NASA. In the Apple TV+ series, von Braun is fired from NASA when the agency uncovers his forced involvement in the Nazi SS organization during World War II. In real life, NASA never ousted von Bron, as his war crimes never surfaced during his lifetime. Von Braun retired from NASA in 1972.
