The first of Mercedes-Benz's high-power EV fast-charging stations will open in October, one of which will be in the company's US headquarters of Atlanta, Georgia.
Two other locations—in Chengdu, China, and Mannheim, Germany—will go live at the same time. The carmaker didn't specify exactly where Atlanta drivers will be able to juice up, except to say that its charging stations will be in "main traffic areas" or at select dealerships.
These stations will offer up to 400kW of charging power via Combined Charging System (CCS) chargers or Tesla-backed North American Charging Standard (NACS) ports. (Chinese drivers can also access GB/T charging systems).
As such, any EVs that support those ports can charge via Mercedes' network, though Mercedes drivers get extra perks like the ability to reserve a charging point. Some locations will have intelligent light poles that display charging point availability and the car's charging status.
In addition, the luxury brand promises that the electricity is sourced responsibly with as close to 100% green energy as possible. Some charging stations may also be equipped with solar panels to provide electricity for the hubs themselves.
Mercedes-Benz announced plans to construct a global charging network in January 2023. It aims to have 2,000 charging stations globally by 2024 and 10,000 by the end of the decade in North America, Europe, China and other "core markets."
More recently, it joined a larger initiative alongside BMW, Honda, Hyundai, and other automakers to bring at least 30,000 public fast charging stations to metropolitan areas, highways, and connecting routes all across the US and Canada.
