With Final Fantasy 16 and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth both having sold below Square Enix’s expectations, the company has announced that it is going to pivot to a multiplatform model– but what does that mean for when its previously released titles will become available on additional platforms? Well, at least as far as Final Fantasy 16 is concerned – which recently launched for PC – it looks like an Xbox release is very much in the cards.
Speaking in a recent interview with Video Games, Final Fantasy 16 producer Naoki Yoshida confirmed that Square Enix wants to bring the game to Xbox Series X/S, suggesting that those waiting to play the action title on the platform needn’t give up hope.
“Of course we did announce the PC version of the game, so looking towards the Xbox version, we do want to release it on Xbox,” Yoshida said. “But when it comes to the specifics such as when the game would be available and such, we are not in a position to be able to share anything. But of course, I want to say that it’s not as if there’s zero hope, and we very much do want to achieve that. So players should not give up in terms of their hopes.”
This isn’t the first time the possibility of Final Fantasy 16 on Xbox has come up. Earlier this year, Yoshida stated Square Enix was looking to bring the game to “other platforms” following its PC release, while not long afterward, director Hiroshi Takai also seemed to tease an Xbox release for the game. Leaks have also repeatedly claimed that the action title is indeed headed for Microsoft’s platform.
