Every month brings a new full Moon for humans to stare in amazement at, and for February 2022, the latest full Moon (also known as the Snow Moon) will be on full display later tonight. Outer space is a never-ending sea of wonders. It's filled with countless galaxies, alien planets, gorgeous stars, and intricate nebulae. Unfortunately, most of these aren't visible from Earth with the human eye.
Something that is visible, however, is the Moon. The Moon has a constant presence in Earth's sky. Its gray, rocky surface is often visible during the day and night, with certain phases making those features more visible. About every 29.5 days, the Moon, Earth, and Sun are lined up perfectly to create a full Moon. As light from the Sun illuminates Earth, the sunlight also exposes the Moon behind our planet and turns it into a full circle in the sky above.

Following last month's full Moon on January 17, the next full Moon is happening tonight on Wednesday, February 16. Each full Moon is given a distinct name, and for February's full Moon, it's known as the 'Snow Moon.' The reasoning behind this one is fairly obvious. February tends to be one of the snowiest months in North America, and as such, the Snow Moon reflects that. Full Moon names originated from Native Americans many years ago. Along with the Snow Moon, other full Moon names include the Buck Moon, Flower Moon, Wolf Moon, etc.
