An extraction-based multiplayer shooter spin-off game based on Far Cry is in development at Ubisoft Toronto.
The rumor comes from Tom Henderson, who's usually spot-on with his reports. It's actually a follow-up to a news Henderson posted in late January about two Far Cry projects being in development: Far Cry 7 (codenamed Project Blackbird) and the multiplayer spin-off (codenamed Project Maverick).
Henderson says the game's scope has evolved several times over the years, finally settling on the extraction-based shooter subgenre made popular by Escape from Tarkov and Hunt: Showdown. The game is supposedly set in a fictionalized version of Alaska called Alashnica.
In this inhospitable land, players will be forced to scavenge resources to make all kinds of things. They'll have to hunt animals for their leather, harvest plants to craft medical items, find weapon parts to create weapons, and so on.
Unsurprisingly, a Hideout will be the player's base of operations, where they can safely store all their hard-earned loot. The Hideout can be shared with party members, says the report.
As with any extraction-based shooter game, progression in this Far Cry spin-off will require players to acquire loot, level up, and obtain new perks. The latter two are strictly tied since leveling up is done through the completion of in-game contracts and provides access to perks.
The main twist is that a permadeath feature of sorts will be implemented in the game. Whenever your character dies, everything they acquired up to that point in terms of levels and perks will be gone, along with whatever gear they had upon them. The only thing kept is the loot stashed in the Hideout.
We'll see if this mechanics stays in the game up to the final version.
