If you’re a mobile gamer, and in particular an Apple Arcade subscriber, you might know about Fantasian. Arguably, it remains one of the best RPG experiences on the iOS mobile platform, and if you have the hardware to play it I suggest you stop reading right now and go and download it. Go on then. What are you waiting for? However, if you haven’t played or heard of it then it’s time to rejoice, with Fantastian Neo Dimension bringing the Square Enix RPG to Nintendo Switch.
One of the main reasons to get excited by Fantasian Neo Dimension is the fact that it comes from Final Fantasy series creator Hironobu Sakaguchi and the most lauded FInal Fantasy composer, Nobuo Uematsu. This pairing marked the game out as an RPG with huge potential, and they absolutely delivered on it, turning in an enticing fantasy world, compelling narrative and a glorious symphonic soundtrack.
Fantasian plays out in an extensive world, broken down into individual areas, with turn-based combat. That turn-based combat made excellent use of mobile touchscreens, and you can bend your attacks so that they curve through multiple enemies. It introduces a really interesting level of strategy to every attack, and I’m hoping that you’ll be able to use the touchscreen of the Nintendo Switch when you’re on the go. As proven by the Apple TV version, it works fine with traditional controls as well.
Leo, the central hero, is suffering a nasty dose of amnesia, and while that could be the start of any RPG, the setting and ongoing narrative will undoubtedly draw you in. He’s also joined by an intriguing group of characters along the way, with their own batch of special moves and narrative strands.
Fantasian Neo Dimension releases on Nintendo Switch later this year, at some point during Holiday 2024. Stay tuned to TheSixthAxis for more!
