Nintendo‘s massively multiplayer racing game F-Zero 99 is getting a new mode that plays more like the SNES original.
According to an update on Nintendo’s Japanese website, the game will be getting a version 1.1.0 update on November 29, and will include a new mode called Classic Race.
This mode still focuses on online races, but changes the rules to more closely match those of the original SNES F-Zero, on which F-Zero 99 is based.
Rather than 99 racers, Classic Race mode will limited the number of participants to 20.
The Spin Attack move and the Skyway mid-air track will be removed, because they weren’t in the original game, and players won’t be able to increase their Power Meter by scoring a KO.
While players can use their turbo boost whenever they want in the standard F-Zero 99 mode, in Classic Race they only get a single-use turbo each time they complete a lap.
Finally, to make the SNES inspiration complete, Classic Race mode is played with a 4:3 screen ratio instead of 16:9 widescreen.

Version 1.1.0 will also add a new feature called Lucky Cards, in which the player’s finishing position and chosen car are recorded for five races, then compared with a randomly generated Lucky Card with various numbers and cars on it. Players will get rewards depending on how many matches they get.
F-Zero 99, a massively multiplayer racing game, was a surprise release on Switch in September.
Its announcement led to Takaya Imamura, the former Nintendo artist who created the characters and vehicles in F-Zero, thanking Nintendo for bringing the series back.
