Evil Dead gives players a lot of freedom when it comes to building their Survivors by allowing them to freely respec characters. The success of multiplayer horror games such as Dead by Daylight paved the way for Evil Dead: The Game, which bases much of its gameplay on the same formula but with some very significant changes. Evil Dead is based on the film trilogy of the same name, in which the main character, Ash Williams, fights hordes of undead spawned from a gateway to hell opened up by the infamous book, the Necromonicon.
After each session in Evil Dead, players will receive a set amount of experience points. Because wins gift more experience than losses, players attempting to level up a character may want to try playing against AI opponents as it increases their chances for success. Players can use experience points to level up a character of their choice, who will gain one skill point with each level up.

Although both Demons and Survivors level up in a similar manner, Demons in Evil Dead: The Game can level up all the way to 45, while the maximum for a Survivor is level 25. Although players can freely respect a character in which they have invested skill points, they cannot move those skill points to another Survivor. Skill points can be used to improve a character in several ways, such as increasing attributes, reducing cooldown timers, or even increasing ammunition.
