A revival of Firefly is rumored to be in the works from Disney; here's everything to know about the reboot of Joss Whedon's sci-fi western. Firefly ran for one season on Fox in 2002, Whedon's third show on the air at the time with Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Angel. But Firefly was unrelated to the world of magic and vampires; taking place in 2517, the show chronicled the adventures of Captain Malcolm Reynolds (Nathan Fillion) and his crew aboard the Serenity, a small transport spaceship on the outskirts of the galaxy after Mal lost a civil war.
Due to meddling by the Fox network and a horrific time slot, Firefly never found an audience during its original run and was unceremoniously cancelled after only one season. But the show would become a cult hit through DVD and streaming viewers, and even spawned a follow-up film, Serenity, in 2005. That film serves as a solid thematic ending to the story of Mal, River Tam (Summer Glau), Hoban Washburne (Alan Tudyk), and the rest of Serenity's crew after they uncovered the truth about the monstrous, cannibalistic Reavers.

But there may still be life in Firefly after all. Rumors abound that Disney is eager to reboot the series for Disney+, though with some significant changes. If Serenity does end up flying again, it could look decidedly different, possibly to the ire of long-time Firefly viewers.
Disney obtained the rights to Firefly when they bought 20th Century Fox in 2019, as part of a multi-billion dollar deal.
