With a new subset for Generation 9 set to release in Japan, early looks at some of the new Illustration Rare cards have appeared. Illustration Rares will replace Rainbow Rares for Gen 9, aiming to showcase a Pokémon in the open world while giving a glimpse into their personality. This fits well with the general theme of Gen 9 as it was the first in the series to have a fully open world to explore in. Additionally, any card will be able to become an Illustration Rare regardless of status or rarity, and this includes trainer cards.
In Japan, the first subsets for Gen 9 have already been released, with and being the next to join in. In the West, smaller subsets, like the newly released subset, are put together to make one large set, which is why Western collectors can expect to see these cards around the end of March or early April. Generation 8 recently wrapped up with the set and established another period of success for the trading card game. Due to 's massive success and the 's popularity, the new Gen 9 sets already have high expectations.

So far, the new Illustration Rare cards have been organized based on which game, or, they are more prominent in. Something else that separates them from the ever-popular Secret Rares is that their set number is not outside the printed size. This method is the critical way that the 's Secret Rares are spotted by collectors, as the set number will be on the bottom left of the card.
