Neighbours may seem like just another soap opera, but this Australian series has produced some major Hollywood names over the course of its history. From gladiators to superhero namesakes, plenty of household names have got their start on Neighbours, one of the many soaps created by Reg Watson, who also had his hands in Sons and Daughters, and Britain's Crossroads.
First premiering in 1985, Neighbours is a soap opera that told the stories of families living in Erinsborough, a fictional suburban town of Melbourne, Victoria. The series is primarily centered on Ramsay Street, a cul-de-sac that is occupied by the Ramsay, Robinson, and Clarke families. While the cast expanded over the years, the main focus of the series is the friendships that are shared between families in a tight-knit neighborhood. Like many other soap operas, Neighbours focused on stories involving relationships and intergenerational drama, but also explored the topics of domestic abuse, sexuality, and drug use.

The future of the beloved soap opera is currently in jeopardy. While the series is broadcast and partially produced by Channel Ten in Australia, it has been primarily bankrolled by Channel 5, a Viacom-CBS owned channel in the UK, since 2008. Recently, Channel 5 announced that it would unfortunately no longer be producing Neighbours in favor of creating more original programming. Channel Ten is now attempting to find another partner to produce the soap opera; if it can't, Neighbours may finally be coming to an end after over 20 years.
