Gail Lerner makes her feature film directorial debut with Cheaper by the Dozen, streaming now on Disney+, but how does the 2022 reboot stack up to the multiple versions that came before it? Following Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox, the media monolith has endeavored to try its hand at revitalizing one of its dormant properties. In the nearly 75 years since its inception, there have been five Cheaper by the Dozen movies and sequels, each offering a vastly different take on the original story.
The Cheaper by the Dozen movies are all loosely based on the semi-autobiographical 1948 novel by brother and sister duo Ernestine Gilbreth Carey and Frank Gilbreth Jr. recounting their experience growing up in a house with 12 children. The novel is effectively a collection of short stories paying homage to the author's late father, deriving the book’s title from one of his favorite jokes; when asked why he had so many kids, Frank Gilbreth Sr. would often respond “Well, they come cheaper by the dozen, you know.” The two siblings would go on to publish a sequel, Belles on Their Toes, in 1950, continuing the saga of their lives after the death of their father.

Each film in the Cheaper by the Dozen franchise takes liberties with the source material, with some being nearly unrecognizable from the Gilbreths’ life and works. Character names change with each new installment, and the elements and overall tone of the stories vary drastically.
