As the Sorcerer Supreme, Doctor Strange is one of the most powerful superheroes in the Marvel Universe – but his origin story is built on a false promise. Stephen Strange’s salvation is a classic tale of a haughty doctor who lost his future as a surgeon and began another as a magical defender. But Doctor Strange: Nexus of Nightmares #1 suggests the flaws that Strange possessed before he became the Sorcerer Supreme are still present (and even Strange admits it).
First appearing in Strange Tales #110, Stephen Strange initially appeared in a backup story (the main event was the Human Torch), but quickly gained a following of his own. Steve Ditko and Stan Lee’s latest creation was a deliberate attempt to move away from the more science-based heroes and take the shared universe of Marvel Comics into a more mystical direction. The origin story, told in Strange Tales #115, begins with a highly egotistical Strange suffering a near-fatal car crash; he is left with lasting nerve damage and can no longer continue his successful medical career.
