Elden Ring finally launched last week, ending a years-long wait for what might well have been one of the most-anticipated games of all time. This time last week you might have thought an opening sentence like that was a little hyperbolic. Elden Ring is a Souls game after all, a genre that while popular, is off-putting to a lot of video game fans as they are notoriously difficult by design. However, it appears more people than ever were prepared for whatever Elden Ring had to throw at them.
The numbers have been rolling in and as revealed by Gamesindustry.biz, they are higher than FromSoftware could have ever imagined. Elden Ring has enjoyed the best launch outside of a FIFA or Call Of Duty title since Red Dead Redemption 2, so bigger than any other game besides those two series for almost four years.

If that isn't enough perspective for you, that means Elden Ring had a better opening weekend than Cyberpunk 2077, Assassin's Creed Valhalla, and The Last Of Us Part 2. Elden Ring's launch has been huge, and if a never-ending stream of posts about the game on Twitter has made it feel as if everyone is playing it, that's because everybody is.
Elden Ring closed out what was a very busy February for the video game industry. The week before it arrived, Horizon Forbidden West launched on PS4 and PS5. Aloy's sequel had a pretty great opening weekend itself, but Elden Ring managed to sell 2.5x as many copies as the new Horizon game.
