Not including yearly sequels, Elden Ring has enjoyed the biggest UK launch in four years, as digital sales data is finally revealed.
It was obvious when the physical sales charts were released that Elden Ring had been a massive hit, as it immediately became FromSoftware’s most successful launch ever.
However, that was only physical sales, and the majority of games are now bought digitally, with the exact percentage varying wildly depending on the game and format. As a predominately single-player title it was hard to guess how well Elden Ring had sold online but it turns out the answer was very well indeed.
Going only by physical sales Elden Ring was only the third biggest launch of the year so far, behind Horizon Forbidden West, but when both physical and digital sales are looked at together it’s the biggest since Red Dead Redemption 2 in 2018.
According to sales data provided to GamesIndustry.biz, Elden Ring sold 2.5 times more than Horizon Forbidden West at launch and more than Cyberpunk 2077, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, and anything else that isn’t FIFA or Call Of Duty.
Technically, it’s possible that any number of Nintendo titles could have outsold it, but since Nintendo (and Bethesda) don’t share digital sales data it’s impossible to know for sure.
In the end digital downloads accounted for 68% of all Elden Ring sales, rising to 85% on Xbox – which even managed to beat PC on 73%. For PlayStation formats though digital sales were only just over half.
That means that the sales across each format were very similar, with PlayStation 5 having a slim majority on 32%, followed by PC on 30%, Xbox on 29%, and PlayStation 4 on 9%.
