John Romero, one of the original designers of Doom, is working on a new first-person shooter.
Romero announced(Opens in a new window) the news on Tuesday, saying the upcoming game will feature “original, new IP (intellectual property).” So you can expect a new game world and characters separate from the Doom universe.
The first-person shooter will also be built with Unreal Engine 5, a game engine that’s designed to deliver the most realistic graphics to date. In addition, Romero plans on distributing the game through an unnamed “major publisher.”
He also made the announcement to attract game designers to his studio, Romero Games(Opens in a new window). “Our team is expanding, and we’re looking for talented people for all positions and at all experience levels,” he wrote.
Romero is best known for creating shooters including Wolfenstein 3D, the original Doom, Doom II games, and Quake through id Software, which he helped found. But in recent years, he’s been relatively quiet on the FPS game development front. In 2016, he had plans to release a fast-paced futuristic shooter called Blackroom(Opens in a new window), but the Kickstarter campaign for it was later canceled. In 2019, he released new content for the original Doom game in a “megawad” dubbed SIGIL.
Romero didn’t reveal much else about the upcoming FPS, making it unclear if it involves Blackroom. But his website notes the team at Romero Games includes people who worked on other hit franchises such as Far Cry, Watchdogs, Crysis, and Tom Clancy’s The Division 1 and 2.
“Our team has shipped over 200 titles individually and won as many awards, including multiple game-of-the-year awards and even a BAFTA Special Award,” the site adds.
