Stranger Things season 4 teases Nancy Wheeler's (Natalia Dyer) death at the end of volume 1, but it's unlikely to actually happen in volume 2. Returning after a three-year absence, Stranger Things 4 is its scariest and most brutal yet, eschewing some of its small town charm to go bigger and and more deadly than ever before. In large part that's thanks to Stranger Things' new villain, Vecna, who terrorizes Hawkins' teenagers to the extent its residents come to believe that murders are the work of the devil, as he leaves a trail of bodies with broken limbs and removed eyes.
Vecna's victims in Stranger Things season 4, volume 1 are contained to new characters, introduced to be killed off and establish just how much of the threat the new monster is, but there are hints of bigger kills to come. One of Vecna's biggest targets is Max Mayfield (Sadie Sink), as he looks to exploit her grief and trauma after brother Billy Hargrove's (Dacre Montgomery) death to claim her for himself. Max is able to avoid him, in part thanks to Kate Bush song «Running Up That Hill,» but by the end of the season there's another main character in his sights: Nancy.

With Nancy, Steve Harrington (Joe Keery), Robin Buckley (Maya Hawke), and Eddie Munson (Joseph Quinn) in the Upside Down (and 1983, no less), they're pulled back through the gate one-by-one. That goes according to plan for Robin and Eddie, but Nancy is caught by Vecna, seemingly trapped within the red smoked realm that is his mind. Steve is still with her physical body in the Upside Down, but the implication is very much that Nancy has been taken over by Vecna, haunted
