Hulu’s Dollface season 2 features comedian Iliza Shlesinger in a cameo role, but the series missed the opportunity to turn her appearance into the perfect running gag. Kat Dennings stars in Dollface as Jules Wiley, a woman in her late-20s learning to value female friendships and herself post-breakup. Jules’ imagination continues to run away with her in season 2 with the show maintaining the fictitious Cat Lady gag and incorporating a fourth-wall-breaking guest spot by Shlesinger.
Dollface season 2 picks up where season 1 left off, as a comedy of female relationship errors following the lives of Jules and her friend group including Madison (Brenda Song), Stella (Shay Mitchell), and Izzy, played by Esther Povitsky, who previously cameoed in Parks & Rec. When Jules and Madison go on a double date in episode 6 “Space Cadet,” Shlesinger offers the audience a play-by-play on Jules and Madison’s eye contact during the date in the form of a linguistics lesson. Shlesinger’s cameo is a gag akin to the Cat Lady, who since season 1, has appeared as a guide for Jules, defining situations as Jules becomes reacclimated to female friendships and explores healthier romantic relationships.

Shlesinger, who is known for observations of women’s behavior in her comedy, is the perfect guest star to weave into another reoccurring antic on Dollface. Shlesinger has a keen sense for breaking down female conduct. From numerous standup specials to her Netflix summer 2021
