A recent TikTok video has gone viral for utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) on Disney Princesses to imagine their live-action versions. Since the release of Snow White in 1937, Disney has tapped into three different eras of animated Disney Princesses, known as the Classics Era, Renaissance Era, and the New-Age Era. Over the decades, the studio has gone through various changes to its animated features, from including more diverse storylines and themes, to altering its animation style for new technology.
Prior to the use of computer-generated imagery and 3D animation at Walt Disney Animation Studios, the majority of animated Disney Princesses were curated through hand-drawn techniques. Although the traditional animation style remained at the forefront of the company’s success for over 70 years, it was ultimately retired after the release of Princess of the Frog in 2009. The animation studio has now transitioned into 3D and CG animation, following the monumental commercial success of Frozen and Wreck-It Ralph.

A recent TikTok video posted by Tony Aubé, shares side-by-side comparisons of popular Disney animated princesses to their digitally reimagined AI designs. With the help of video reenactment technology, Aubé was able to animate realistic portraits of Frozen’s Elsa, Aladdin’s Jasmine, The Little Mermaid’s Ariel, and the titular Moana. Amusingly, the creator also featured Princess Fiona from DreamWorks’ Shrek franchise at the end of the video. See the full clip in the link below:
