What looks to be the biggest Disgaea game yet is slated for an early 2023 release in Japan and will likely come to the West later that year.
It’s only been a year since Disgaea 6: Defiance Of Destiny released and Nippon Ichi Software already has a new sequel ready to launch in only five months time.
Called simply Disgaea 7, it lacks a subtitle for the moment, but looks to be another comically over-the-top strategy role-playing game like its predecessors.
The team has already revealed several new features, first and foremost being the ability to turn your party members into giants. They become so big, in fact, that they don’t even fit on the map.
It feels rather reminiscent of Pokémon Sword & Shield’s Dynamax feature (even the name – Dodeda MAX – sounds similar), but Disgaea’s love of breaking traditional rulesets means this mechanic may not be as limited.
Item reincarnation will also be a thing this time round, allowing you to make weapons and the like even more powerful. One of the examples given is a sword that can be turned into gum so you can eat it to restore health.
Lastly, for the first time in the series, you’ll be able to take your party online and battle against other players. It doesn’t sound like you actually take part in them yourself, though. Instead, you leave it up to the computer and the battles happen automatically.
Speaking of which, the last game’s auto-battle feature is back, though hopefully Disgaea 7 will be engaging enough to not warrant using it. The series is also sticking to the 3D visuals it introduced in Disgaea 6, which many felt were a downgrade from the original 2D graphics.
