A24 has released a new, haunting, and almost completely wordless teaser trailer for Men. The upcoming horror drama film is written and directed by Alex Garland (Devs, Ex Machina).
Not much is known about the film, aside from a brief premise reported by Variety in January 2021--that Men is about a young woman who goes on a solo vacation in the English countryside after the death of her ex-husband. It's difficult to glean even that much from this 90-second clip, as Jessie Buckley (I'm Thinking of Ending Things, Beast) can only be seen taking a walk in the woods, and senses she is being followed by a strange male apparition to an abandoned churchyard and an empty house. Really, it's the soundtrack that ratchets up the terror--check out the clip below and see for yourself.
In addition to Buckley, Men also stars Rory Kinnear (notable for his appearances as Bill Tanner in the Daniel Crag era of James Bond films) and Paapa Essiedu (I May Destroy You) in undisclosed roles. Given Garland's track record and how well Ex Machina and Annihilation performed commercially--netting $36.9 million and $43.1 million respectively--the writer-director now has the clout and trust to build anticipation and an audience for films without revealing much about them.
Men will be in theaters on May 20.
