Warning: contains spoilers for Action Comics #1039!
DC's Superman is one of the strongest superheroes in the comics universe, but despite (or perhaps because of) his phenomenal powers, he has yet to develop any fighting skills. The Man of Steel's long history of Earth-based adventures means he must restrain himself from unleashing his full power, but that has left him vulnerable to attacks from trained fighters. In Action Comics #1039, DC reveals that Superman has effectively zero fighting skills at all.
In Superman's early days, his powers were drastically toned down compared to the more modern incarnation. He couldn't fly, but could «leap tall buildings in a single bound,» and while he was «faster than a speeding bullet» he couldn't race the Flash, let alone travel around the planet in seconds. It wasn't until the Silver Age that Superman could literally drag planets around the galaxy with a chain, or go back in time by breaking the «time barrier» as one does the sound barrier. Thankfully, 1985's Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover depowered the Man of Steel somewhat — but on Earth, he still relies on his brute strength to solve problems. This gets him into tremendous trouble on Warworld.
