Warning: contains spoilers for Suicide Squad #12!
There is only one hero in the DC Universe who can truly lay claim to being the company's equivalent of Deadpool, and Suicide Squad just confirmed it's Ambush Bug. Ambush Bug, recently pressed into joining Task Force X, regularly breaks the fourth wall, and in Suicide Squad #12, he meets a Deadpool pastiche from Earth-8, and the encounter reveals why Ambush Bug is truly DC’s version of Deadpool. The issue is on sale now in print and digital, and is written by Robbie Thompson and Dennis Hopeless, drawn by Eduardo Pansica, Julio Ferreira and Dexter Soy, colored by Marcelo Maiolo and Matt Herms, and lettered by Wes Abbott.
Created by Keith Gifffen, Ambush Bug first appeared in 1982’s DC Comics Presents #52. Ambush Bug’s real name is Irwin Schwab (or so he says) and he wears a green suit that allows him to teleport anywhere in the multiverse. Ambush Bug’s grasp on reality is tenuous at best, which allows him to break the fourth wall and talk to readers; however, it also makes the other heroes view him as a joke and a loose cannon. Recently, Ambush Bug somehow made his way to the Suicide Squad, which Amanda Waller has repurposed to help achieve her goals of claiming a new Earth as her own. Waller seeks to build her own Justice League and use them to “liberate” Earth-3, sealing it off from the rest of the multiverse. Ambush Bug has continued his wise-cracking, metatextual ways even in the face of such heavy adventures, and on Earth-8 (DC's parody of the Marvel Universe), readers learn why he truly is DC’s Deadpool.
