With a few years gone since the situation, Constance Wu reveals she attempted suicide after her Fresh Off the Boat backlash. The ABC sitcom was based on Eddie Huang's autobiography and centers on the Huangs, a Taiwanese-American family who have moved from Chinatown to Washington, DC to Orlando, Florida to open a cowboy-themed steakhouse and struggle to adjust to their new home. Fresh Off the Boat hailed from creator Nahnatchka Khan, who had previously teamed with ABC for the short-lived sitcom Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23 and has since become known for her work with NBC's Young Rock and Netflix's Always Be My Maybe.
Randall Park and Constance Wu led the cast of Fresh Off the Boat alongside Hudson Yang, Forrest Wheeler, Ian Chen, Lucille Soong, Chelsey Crisp and Ray Wise. Running for six seasons on ABC, the sitcom scored largely positive reviews from critics and audiences alike for its melding of family sitcom tropes with timely satire and for boosting representation of Asian-American families. While Fresh Off the Boat helped launch some of its stars into the spotlight, one came under fire near the end of the show's run and they're reflecting on the situation.
