Five-time Emmy Award nominee has been tapped to star in a lead role for. The comedy series from Nick Paley (Marcel the Shell With Shoes On) has just received a pilot order at Hulu.
Fresh off her starring role in the horror movie Here After and the black comedy Winner, Britton is said to be playing a single mom named Ellen. The comedy series was originally planned for development back in 2022.
In addition to starring, the actress will also executive produce the project alongside Charlie’s Production Company’s Charlie Alderman, Goddard Textiles’ Drew Goddard, and Sarah Esberg.
Billed as a “coming-of-age mystery,” Phony will revolve around “a teenager who wakes up in the hospital after a car accident to discover his mom (Britton) — his only parent and his best friend — appears to have been replaced by an impostor,” per Variety’s report. Paley will serve as the writer, executive producer, and the pilot’s director.
Phony serves as the latest comedy pilot ordered at Hulu, following the Murray Bartlett and Eve Hewson-led Downforce.
Britton, who made her film debut in 1995’s The Brothers McMullen, has starred in movies like Friday Night Lights, No Looking Back, The Next Big Thing, One Eyed King, Looking for Kitty, The Lather Effect, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, The Fitzgerald Family Christmas, The To Do List, Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, Professor Marston and The Wonder Women, Bombshell, Promising Young Woman, and Luckiest Girl Alive, among others.
On the television side, the actress is known for her roles in The Fighting Fitzgeralds, American Horror Story: Murder House, Nashville, SMILF, 9-1-1, Dirty John, The White Lotus, and Dear Edward.
