HBO has officially announced that a is on the way, with the sequel series to 2002’s hit iconic film City of God returning.
The series, which just premiered its first season this month, serves as a follow-up to the film, which itself is adapted from the 1997 novel of the same name by Paulo Lins. The show follows the characters 20 years after the events of the original film, “through the lens of Wilson (Rocket), who returns to the community when a young drug dealer’s release from prison puts City of God in dispute once again.”
The Brazilian series hails from producers Andrea Barata Ribeiro, Fernando Meirelle, Cris Abi and Gustavo Gontijo, with Mariano Cesar, Anouk Aaron, and Monica Albuquerque executive producing. The creative team includes writers Sérgio Machado, Renata Di Carmo, Armando Praça, Estevão Ribeiro, Rodrigo Felha, and Aly Muritiba, with the latter also serving as the general director.
City of God: The Fight Rages On features a variety of returning cast members from the original, including Alexandre Rodrigues, Thiago Martins, Roberta Rodrigues, Sabrina Rosa, Kiko Marques, and Edson Oliveira.
They are joined by several new faces, including Andréia Horta, Marcos Palmeira, Jefferson Brasil, Eli Ferreira, Luellem de Castro, Otávio Linhares, Rafael Lozano, Leandro Daniel, Luiz Bertazzo, and emerging talents from Rio de Janeiro communities like City of God, Vidigal, and Mangueira.
“The series is an adapted continuation of the literary work by author Paulo Lins, and will follow the story of its characters, starting with the work of the photographer Buscapé. Set in the early 2000s, the series includes excerpts from the film as flashbacks to reconstruct the protagonists’ memories,” reads the synopsis of the series.
