Karl Urban voices the character of Jacob Holland in Netflix's upcoming animated movie The Sea Beast. Holland is a legendary sea monster hunter whose life is turned upside down when Maisie, voiced by Zaris-Angel Hator, joins the crew. Jared Harris, Dan Stevens, Marianna Jean-Baptiste, and Kathy Burke also lend their voices to The Sea Beast. Williams is perhaps best known for his work in the Disney realm as he has contributed his talents to films like Frozen, Big Hero 6, and Moana. Now, Netflix is set to release Williams' latest directorial effort on July 8.

Screen Rant sat down with director, writer, and producer Chris Williams to discuss The Sea Beast, including the childhood inspirations behind the movie, building an entire world from the ground up, and toeing the line between reality and fantasy.
Screen Rant: Chris, you mentioned that as a child you were really into classic adventure movies. Were there any specific references you had in mind while developing The Sea Beast?
Chris Williams: Well, certainly King Kong. King Kong was one that we talked about a lot as an example of a really great monster movie that had these huge set pieces. Also, there was connection, there was a relationship. You got to really know and empathize with the monster. That was something that we talked about a lot.
