Chris Pine describes his upcoming movie Dungeons & Dragons as a unique cross between Game of Thrones and The Princess Bride. The popular fantasy tabletop RPG led to a poorly-reviewed trilogy that began in 2000 with a big screen release starring Jeremy Irons, Thora Birch, and Marlon Wayans; the two subsequent sequels were sent straight to DVD in 2005 and 2012. Now, Paramount is hoping to ride the wave of renewed love for high-fantasy projects by rebooting Dungeons & Dragons with a high-profile cast. Game Night duo Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley are directing.
Though most plot and character details are still being kept under wraps, Dungeons & Dragons has drummed up plenty of buzz thanks to its cast. Pine leads an ensemble that also includes Michelle Rodriguez, Justice Smith, Regé-Jean Page, Sophia Lillis, and Hugh Grant. After the Dungeons & Dragons reboot was delayed by the coronavirus pandemic, Paramount set its release for March 2023. Production took place last year and wrapped in August, hopefully ensuring the film won't suffer any additional postponements.
