Chocobo GP players aren't happy with the constant microtransactions and grinding, comparing it to a free-to-play mobile game.
Final Fantasy fans thought that they were in for a treat when Chocobo GP launched earlier in the week, but early feedback indicates that it's not quite the cheery kart racer that most were expecting. Instead, players are reporting that much of the game requires grinding or, even worse, giving in to microtransactions to access content in a game that already costs $50.

Throughout Chocobo GP, players can unlock new costumes, karts, and items through various different types of currency. Although this is pretty standard for a kart racer, Chocobo GP reportedly hands out these currencies at a pace that is being compared to a free-to-play phone game, forcing players to either grind or pay for Mythril, the game's premium currency.
The most prominent example of this grind comes from how difficult it is to unlock popular characters like Squall and Cloud. Cloud is part of the game's Prize Pass, but can only be unlocked once the player reaches Level 60, which takes a lot of time and playing. In fact, players are reporting that even an hour of playing will only rank them up a few times in the pass, even if they win a tournament.
Squall is arguably even worse to unlock, as he costs 3,000 Gil, with an optional vehicle for anotger 9,000 Gil. Gil is earned incredibly slowly throughout Chocobo GP, and it's made worse by the fact that it can be unlocked through the Prize Pass, essentially pushing players towards paying for Mythril to progress in the Prize Pass and be rewarded the necessary Gil through tier unlocks.
All of this would be somewhat less controversial
