One of the most effective ways to celebrate Black History Month is to not only remember the legacies of Black people in the past, but support Black people in the present. You should support Black people doing cool work in industries you care about, and if that means you also get to play dope video games because they’re made by Black developers, then everybody wins.
Forget E3, GDC, and Comic-Con. For my money, the Game Devs of Color Expo is the most exciting video game conference of the current moment. I’ve loved my annual trips to this celebration of representation at Harlem’s historic Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. Along with viewing (and participating in) thought-provoking panels on building a more diverse games industry, I’ve played some of the freshest and coolest indie game demos I’ve ever seen. When people of color who are also into video games come together, magical things happen.
Unsurprisingly, last year’s GDoC Expo was entirely remote, but we still got a great show full of outstanding work from inspiring talent. Thanks to a partnership with Steam, the expo also let people at home download and play PC demos for more than a dozen games. We'll have to wait a few months for the next GDoC Expo, but if you head to the Gradient Convergence page, you can still see the highlighted games, and in some cases, try the demos. The majority of these games are still in development, but a smattering are available for full purchase right now.
Need help knowing where to start? Check out our full list of these indie games from developers of color. Some are coming soon, but others are available now!
