CD Projekt Red recently announced that the next entry in the long-running The Witcher franchise will not be built in the REDengine. This proprietary engine was also used to produce Cyberpunk 2077, which has only recently become playable in the opinion of many fans.
CD Projekt Red rose to prominence through the release of The Witcher trilogy. The first two entries in the franchise, while well-received by many, were dwarfed by the third game when it came to popularity and generally positive reception. While this series has received no shortage of praise for its polished visuals, exceptional writing, and detailed world-building, all three games had some technical shortcomings. This was mirrored and exacerbated in Cyberpunk 2077, which had a disastrous launch thanks to its multitudinous bugs and performance issues. The sci-fi RPGhas had most of its issues fixed at this point — and the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 DLC could make the game even better — but some players have become wary of CD Projekt Red's development cycle.

Those fans might be happy to learn that the recently announced next chapter in The Witcher franchise will be moving on from the REDengine. The reveal of the new game on The Witcher Twitter account was accompanied by the announcement that the studio would be using Unreal Engine 5 for this new game and working closely with Epic Games.
