With the announcement that Sony is turning Horizon Zero Dawn into a Netflix series, the studio's casting choice for the role of Aloy is up in the air. Perhaps due to the success of Netflix's The Witcher, the company is looking to stream another video game adaptation. With Horizon Zero Dawn currently still in its early development stages, though, it may be a number of years before fans get to watch Aloy take down robot dinosaurs on the small screen.
Set in a far-future Earth where robotic animals roam the ruins of modern civilization, Horizon Zero Dawn tells the story of Aloy, an outcast from her tribe since birth who is trained by an elite hunter to one day compete for acceptance by her people. When a doomsday cult marks her for death because of her appearance and special genetic code, Aloy is swept up in a quest to find out her true origins, save her tribe — and the rest of the planet — from destruction, and learn the deep secrets of the past that have been lost to the inhabitants of Earth.

Casting Henry Cavill in The Witcher proved to be a wise choice: his star power, reputation as a nerd icon, and acting ability all proved useful in finding that series an audience. Such a tactic will have to be employed with Horizon Zero Dawn as well. While the video game series is popular, finding an audience beyond those who play the games will be essential to the success of the adaptation.
