A copy of the canceled Star Wars: Battlefront 3 PSP game has surfaced on Reddit, revealing that development on the sequel was perhaps further along than previously expected. Star Wars: Battlefront is a long-running series and a cornerstone franchise in the Star Wars gaming universe, having spawned multiple iterations in the form of sequels and spin-offs. The original game, which was published by Lucasarts, launched back in 2004, before sparking development on the 2005 hit Star Wars: Battlefront II, and the handheld sequels Renegade Squadron, Elite Squadron, and Mobile Squadrons. Before the PSP and Nintendo DS spin-offs were released, however, a third mainline installment to Star Wars: Battlefront was planned but was canned before its official launch.
Star Wars: Battlefront has since been rebooted, with EA’s games drastically changing the series’ formula. Packed with controversial microtransactions and variations on the original’s beloved conquest game mode, the reboots were marred with bad press upon release. That said, EA’s Star Wars: Battlefront 2 does have a sizeable player base, due in part to mods, as well as the fact that EA attempted to rectify many of the first reboot’s issues. However, fans would likely agree that the original Star Wars: Battlefront games had something special, and would have loved to see a third mainline game release. The canceled Star Wars: Battlefront 3was previously claimed to have been in development for two years, though there was no confirmation as to how deep in the process Lucasarts and Free Radical Design were before the game was canned.
